FIVE! Five magical, wonderful, cherished years with you so far.  In my mind it often feels like you should still be a baby, time has passed so quickly and it's hard to comprehend sometimes that you're already such a big boy.  But a big boy you are and an amazing one at that!  You are strong-willed, smart, love to make others laugh, handsome, and brave.  We celebrated your day with a trip to Tennessee and then partied hard the next day.

You are so loved baby.  Being your momma is my greatest joy!

Checking In

currently: 3 weeks out from being done with my first year of nursing school and feeling so ready, I can hardly stand it

reading: I just finished Everything We Keep and started The Secret Wife. I really should not be reading anything but textbooks but sometimes my brain just needs a break

enjoying: Watching Cooper play baseball.  I had no idea just how much we would both love it.

eating: so differently than I ever have in my life before and I have 22 lost pounds to show for it! But seriously, mainly living on carbs for all of my life so far reallllllly packed the pounds on me.

anxious about: Cooper starting kindergarten in August. What? How? I am thrilled to death that he was accepted into our school of choice but I am so not ready for my baby to be in big kid school. Time is cruel.

excited for: Our 8 day stay in the Bahamas at the end of June.  It will be both Cooper and I's first time out of the country (besides me going to Canada several times growing up before passports were needed) and basically the most amazing trip ever! Oh and my sister is getting married while were there so, that too!

loving: The new snake plant I bought today!

Dear Cooper at 4.5+ Years Old

It has been forever and a day since Ive done an update on Cooper and since the whole point of this space is document him and our life together -- i've got work to do!

Cooper James,

You have changed so much in the past three to four months.  You change so much every month but your independence has gone through the roof as of late and it seems like the biggest change of all.  You definitely need me less and that hurts, but makes me feel so proud too.  You brush your own teeth, completely dress and undress yourself, will bathe yourself if I leave you to your own devices to do so, help make your bed, help prepare your food, entertain yourself endlessly, and more.

You are flourishing at school and love to go.  In fact, you're sad to miss a day if the rest of your class will be there because you don't want to miss out on "all of the activities!".  You have made many friends and have yet to get in trouble at school, which I am really surprised about because you can be quite the talker and stinker sometimes! Your teachers are Mrs. Melissa and Mrs. Vivian and you especially love Mrs. Vivian, and her you.  You do lots of writing and practicing letters so that is one of your favorite things to do at home now.  One of the most impressive things you have learned this year so far is how to count to 100 by 10s, next stop is learning to count to 100 by 5s.  You are a quick learner if you're in the mood to learn and a lot like me in that way.

As of the past few days you have been tricking me and everyone around you.  Telling random people at the grocery store your birthday was yesterday, telling your nanny you can do or wear something that I said you can't, etc.  I can't say this is my favorite stage as I don't like sneakiness but I honestly don't think you're being sneaky - just too smart for your own good.  You love to get a laugh out of people and will go through extreme measures to do so - one of those things that I'm really glad hasn't carried over to your school classroom!

You're my little church buddy and we go to church together every Sunday.  You would always refuse to go to children's church unless Payton was with us but last week you went alone and did great! You'll be starting children's choir next week and we're both excited about that.  I want to provide you with a church family and really just as many people as possible to love and support you, and for you to love and support.

We didn't get to go on too many adventures last year but this year is shaping up to be a lot of fun! We are flying to New Hampshire for almost a week the second week of March and then in June we will be spending a week in the Bahamas for Aunt Beths wedding!  We will both be getting our first passports in a few weeks! I'm hopeful that I'll also get to show you the mountains this year, take another small beach trip, and visit a new state.  Your first couple of years of life we jam packed with fun travels and new experiences, I want to keep that going for us! Since you were born I've always said I'm going to show you the world :)

I love you so much my Jimmy Jame and I am so thankful for you.  You are my greatest gift from God and have given my life such an amazing purpose that I didn't have before you.  Being your momma has changed me in ways I never could have imagined - I am better because of you! I can't believe you will be 5 this year, it's so hard to grasp how quickly we have gotten here.  Kindergarten is just SIX months away.

PS one of the funnest things about you right now is your love for dressing up! You have a lot of dress up costumes - one day you're an indian, or hulk, or a fireman, or a police officer, or a doctor, or a bet, or a construction worker and the next you're something different.  You'll wear your capes or costumes out around town and it always brings smiles to people who see you.  You take your roll very importantly!

it's a new year!

even though nothing really changes from the last day of one year to the first of the next, it does really feel like a fresh start.  a new opportunity. i don't normally take the opportunity but i'm going to try to this year.  i often will make a cliche new years goal and then leave it at that.  but this year i'm turning 26.  actually, in 16 days i'm turning 26! i'm closer to being 30 than i am 20.  its time.

i'm so far away from where i thought i would be at this point in my life.  if i think about it long enough i'll get myself into a major funk.  i do believe that my story is already written though and God has intended for my life to play out like this.  i'm patiently waiting.

2017 has the bones to be a really fun and challenging year and i'm ready and excited for it.  we will be traveling, getting to use passports for the first time, ill be finishing semesters 2 & 3 out of 4 for nursing school, and i get to spend every day with my cooper james.  2016 was loulou mades best year  of business to date and i'm hopeful that it will continue to grow in 2017. this is our year.

I've lost 9 pounds since the middle of novemeber and i'm excited to keep losing.  i'm working on being more intentional with my time with cooper and really embracing him amazing little self and mind.  i know more now than ever who i am, what i want, and what i'm capable of and i'm excited to use myself to its greatest potential this year.

for a long time i have been feeling a profound loss of the community and friendships i used to have.  this is easily going to be one of my busiest years academically but i'm ready to get more involved in my church and community and will hopefully find my village and new friendships along the way.

a reflection: a major thing that happened in 2016 is that i became a coffee drinker! we got to go to disney world for the second time and spend a week at the beach in florida.  cooper started at a new school and i got accepted into the BSN program and started at a new school as well.  it was a good year for us and we are better for it.

lumberjack cooper

i'm really pretty decent at remembering to get pictures printed off and then always terribly disappointed with the quality of them because "hi, i'm libby and i only take iPhone pictures".  I've made it my personal mission to take more actual camera pictures and to learn to shoot in manual mode.  i totally suck at it but hopefully i'll get the hang of it sooner than later.

anyway, my sweet boy has been having a ball with the wood that is temporarily in our backyard - he loves to "do hard work" so he's been lugging large pieces of trees from one side of the yard to the other.  getting the job done, you go cooper! i love him and his desire to want to be outside all the time and not on the couch watching tv.

(seeing these pictures makes me realize that maybe we need to never go 4 weeks without a haircut again.  every three weeks it is)

sidenote: I've started working out and modifying my diet big time, one week in and i've worked out three times and eaten one cooked cookie and two pieces of cookie dough.  so far so good! i seriously freaked when i saw my weight last week, an easy way to kick this booty into gear apparently.
