Dear Cooper at 4.5+ Years Old

It has been forever and a day since Ive done an update on Cooper and since the whole point of this space is document him and our life together -- i've got work to do!

//

Cooper James,

You have changed so much in the past three to four months.  You change so much every month but your independence has gone through the roof as of late and it seems like the biggest change of all.  You definitely need me less and that hurts, but makes me feel so proud too.  You brush your own teeth, completely dress and undress yourself, will bathe yourself if I leave you to your own devices to do so, help make your bed, help prepare your food, entertain yourself endlessly, and more.

You are flourishing at school and love to go.  In fact, you're sad to miss a day if the rest of your class will be there because you don't want to miss out on "all of the activities!".  You have made many friends and have yet to get in trouble at school, which I am really surprised about because you can be quite the talker and stinker sometimes! Your teachers are Mrs. Melissa and Mrs. Vivian and you especially love Mrs. Vivian, and her you.  You do lots of writing and practicing letters so that is one of your favorite things to do at home now.  One of the most impressive things you have learned this year so far is how to count to 100 by 10s, next stop is learning to count to 100 by 5s.  You are a quick learner if you're in the mood to learn and a lot like me in that way.

As of the past few days you have been tricking me and everyone around you.  Telling random people at the grocery store your birthday was yesterday, telling your nanny you can do or wear something that I said you can't, etc.  I can't say this is my favorite stage as I don't like sneakiness but I honestly don't think you're being sneaky - just too smart for your own good.  You love to get a laugh out of people and will go through extreme measures to do so - one of those things that I'm really glad hasn't carried over to your school classroom!

You're my little church buddy and we go to church together every Sunday.  You would always refuse to go to children's church unless Payton was with us but last week you went alone and did great! You'll be starting children's choir next week and we're both excited about that.  I want to provide you with a church family and really just as many people as possible to love and support you, and for you to love and support.

We didn't get to go on too many adventures last year but this year is shaping up to be a lot of fun! We are flying to New Hampshire for almost a week the second week of March and then in June we will be spending a week in the Bahamas for Aunt Beths wedding!  We will both be getting our first passports in a few weeks! I'm hopeful that I'll also get to show you the mountains this year, take another small beach trip, and visit a new state.  Your first couple of years of life we jam packed with fun travels and new experiences, I want to keep that going for us! Since you were born I've always said I'm going to show you the world :)

I love you so much my Jimmy Jame and I am so thankful for you.  You are my greatest gift from God and have given my life such an amazing purpose that I didn't have before you.  Being your momma has changed me in ways I never could have imagined - I am better because of you! I can't believe you will be 5 this year, it's so hard to grasp how quickly we have gotten here.  Kindergarten is just SIX months away.

xoxo

Momma

PS one of the funnest things about you right now is your love for dressing up! You have a lot of dress up costumes - one day you're an indian, or hulk, or a fireman, or a police officer, or a doctor, or a bet, or a construction worker and the next you're something different.  You'll wear your capes or costumes out around town and it always brings smiles to people who see you.  You take your roll very importantly!

it's a new year!

even though nothing really changes from the last day of one year to the first of the next, it does really feel like a fresh start.  a new opportunity. i don't normally take the opportunity but i'm going to try to this year.  i often will make a cliche new years goal and then leave it at that.  but this year i'm turning 26.  actually, in 16 days i'm turning 26! i'm closer to being 30 than i am 20.  its time.

i'm so far away from where i thought i would be at this point in my life.  if i think about it long enough i'll get myself into a major funk.  i do believe that my story is already written though and God has intended for my life to play out like this.  i'm patiently waiting.

2017 has the bones to be a really fun and challenging year and i'm ready and excited for it.  we will be traveling, getting to use passports for the first time, ill be finishing semesters 2 & 3 out of 4 for nursing school, and i get to spend every day with my cooper james.  2016 was loulou mades best year  of business to date and i'm hopeful that it will continue to grow in 2017. this is our year.

I've lost 9 pounds since the middle of novemeber and i'm excited to keep losing.  i'm working on being more intentional with my time with cooper and really embracing him amazing little self and mind.  i know more now than ever who i am, what i want, and what i'm capable of and i'm excited to use myself to its greatest potential this year.

for a long time i have been feeling a profound loss of the community and friendships i used to have.  this is easily going to be one of my busiest years academically but i'm ready to get more involved in my church and community and will hopefully find my village and new friendships along the way.

a reflection: a major thing that happened in 2016 is that i became a coffee drinker! we got to go to disney world for the second time and spend a week at the beach in florida.  cooper started at a new school and i got accepted into the BSN program and started at a new school as well.  it was a good year for us and we are better for it.

lumberjack cooper

i'm really pretty decent at remembering to get pictures printed off and then always terribly disappointed with the quality of them because "hi, i'm libby and i only take iPhone pictures".  I've made it my personal mission to take more actual camera pictures and to learn to shoot in manual mode.  i totally suck at it but hopefully i'll get the hang of it sooner than later.

anyway, my sweet boy has been having a ball with the wood that is temporarily in our backyard - he loves to "do hard work" so he's been lugging large pieces of trees from one side of the yard to the other.  getting the job done, you go cooper! i love him and his desire to want to be outside all the time and not on the couch watching tv.

(seeing these pictures makes me realize that maybe we need to never go 4 weeks without a haircut again.  every three weeks it is)

sidenote: I've started working out and modifying my diet big time, one week in and i've worked out three times and eaten one cooked cookie and two pieces of cookie dough.  so far so good! i seriously freaked when i saw my weight last week, an easy way to kick this booty into gear apparently.

saturday

i think a slow saturday was just what the doctor ordered.  lots of outdoors time, a little cleaning, tacos for dinner, and ending the night now with two sleepy boys in their sleeping bags on the living room floor watching a christmas movie.  a big treat since we're pretty strict on the "no tv before bedtime" rule!

WEEKEND IN REVIEW

friday // night we were in the bed by 9 so i had a feeling it was going to be a good weekend.  couple that with the fact that the upcoming week held zero tests (for once!) i knew we were going to be able to actually get some things done.

saturday // eric had to work and so did i, for a little bit, but thankfully my work just requires climbing about ten stairs and i can do it in my pajamas.  i promised cooper we would make it to the store to pick out some new christmas decorations and possibly take down our fall decorations and put out our christmas ones, so knocking work out of the way first thing was priority.

by 11:30 we were out of the house and headed to jim n nicks for lunch with all of erics family that lives in town and some of his family from out of town.  next up was Joanns to pick up work stuff, office depot to print out some christmas printables purchased from Etsy, and then finally, TJ Maxx so Cooper could pick out his christmas decorations.  we add to the stockpile every year because i love the idea of decorating throughout time as it passes rather than all in one day or season.  this year our house is looking especially festive and i know it will only get better!

i'm anxiously awaiting Trader Joes putting out their fresh garland again this year - it was my favorite thing about our house last year.

we hurried home and got out our totes of decor and cooper excitedly went to town decorating! "Momma this will look GREAT here!" "oh momma I love this one so much" "I'm the best decorator Momma!" - yes he really says momma with just about every sentence he says, sometimes it drives me  batty but mostly i love it. after decorating we changed our clothes and were back out the door again, this time with eric, to go to a family surprise birthday dinner for erics brothers girlfriend.

a busy and great day overall.

sunday // was a seriously long day that started promptly at 6am thanks to the time change.  we ate breakfast right away (strawberry cream cheese butter braid - tell me you've had one!) and were ready for lunch before church even started.  we made our way to town an hour before church started so that we could adventure around the square and get some energy out beforehand - me on foot and cooper on his scooter.  which reminds me, if you are looking for a great gift for your kid get them a Micro Scooter - best money ever spent on cooper.  after church it was a quick trip to get my eyebrows done, lunch at subway, and then back home.  a four year old boy has moved in right next door and we have entered into a whole new territory - i can't tell if i'm going to like it or not haha.  we played outside with the new neighbors while eric worked on rebuilding our back deck railings and then came inside to work and begin on dinner.  my sister and niece joined us for dinner and then cooper was in bed and asleep by 630!

whew // so maybe TMI but that was our weekend!
